Chapter 2: Critical Thinking

Chapter 2: Overview

"The older we get, the more precious does the mind become." ( Janero & Altshuler, 2011, p. 16)

In chapter two, we learn about critical thinking and how we use it in everyday life. Our minds change over time and our critical thinking expands and sharpens. Often times as we get older we want an escape from our minds, we want a time to be able to remove ourselves from our thoughts. Throughout time we start to concern ourselves with what the thoughts of other may be based off of our own mind and how we perceive things. The development of our minds gets better overtime. In my opinion, most people are progressive. The more we age, and experience life, the more we witness our minds do the same. The things that we start to think about become shifted as our experiences create themselves. We then will think about how something made us feel, based off of an experience. We start to display a cautious approach, knowing our mind may be thinking one way, but because as we get older we learn to stamp our thoughts, and where our minds may have been, which creates us to use critical thinking and perhaps rethink our actions.

I also believe this quote is a great example of the value of critical thinking and as the quote states how precious the mind becomes. I believe that as we get older our minds are more precious. Most of us look to older people for their words of wisdom, to learn of their past experiences, and to explore of how views and thoughts they have at their current age. The mind is a powerful thing. As I have stated before your thoughts become things, the way we then create and put action into those things. The way we use our critical thinking allows are execution of that to be stronger. Especially with the older we get, we then start to know the proper approaches that will lead us to what we believe achieving whatever that may be. Again, although there is positivity to the thoughts in our minds, it is also is something hard to escape. Chapter two explains how our minds can also be critical to our emotions. According to chapter two, "escape is not only pleasant but absolutely necessary" (Janero & Altshuler, 2011, p. 16). I feel like as we get older we learn how to manage those things. We start to be able to provide ourselves with healthy escapes. Everyone has their own way of an escape. We as humans have to always protect our mind which I think will always be a precious place to self. We start to take more value in those things as we learn more about ourselves. One thing every human can debatably agree on is that your minds, our critical thinking is specific to ourselves and naturally we will always attempt to make ourselves satisfied based off of what goes on in our mind.

"Having developed the habit of critical analysis, we are prepared to confront a real problem in our own life" ( Janero & Altshuler, 2011, p. 22)

Experience is the best teacher. I think that through our lives as humans we all will face adversity, difficulties, conflict, and confrontation. We all will process those things differently. The more experience we have with things, the better we are at handling them. Our experience's lead us to learn how to deal with certain problems in our life that may arise. Those things prepare us for future problems. At a young age we learn what disappointment is. We learn that sometimes we will not get what we want. We learn that in life you will be let down. For the most part we only have to experience something once for us to know what the outcome will be if the same thing or similar may occur. It is our critical thinking that allows us to be able to be in a position to analyze that clearly there will be mental preparation now if something like this comes up again. This is especially true when it comes to bad things we experience, or what we consider to be problems. For example, as adults we know we have to survive, we have to make a living, we have to make sure that daily life, and the things we need to provide for our daily lives have requirements. We are aware that if we are paying for a place to stay, we have to be on time. We have to be mindful to know we are all subject to a due date, and in most cases that is the beginning of the month. In the event we fail to do that, we already have developed an analysis that will prepare us for that type of consequence. If you do not pay, you're now in a personal problem. We now use our critical thinking for preparation for the predictable outcome if in fact we do not meet our end of a rental agreement. Although it is a bad situation, having the knowledge of what could occur next, we prepare accordingly.  We would start first with analyzing our options. How much do I have to pay towards this balance?, What type of approach should I have when asking for more time? What additional fees will occur with this being past due? How can I prevent this in the future? Can I realistically have what I need for the following month? We use our analysis to handle our problems.

This is the same with personal interactions. Anytime we have co-workers, friends, etc. No matter what at some point once we learn who they are we know how to properly interact with them. Sometimes we have disagreements, when at a job there is always room for mistakes. Mistakes causes you to get better at your job. They're needed in order to progress and perform better. There have been plenty of times at different jobs that I have had to learn from mistakes. Especially with a fast pace job. We all know there is a standard to adhere to when working at any facility. If we are faced with any problems of not following guidelines, instructions, or protocol we then have consequences, because our mistakes can cause problems. So again, we would use critical thinking to analyze as we prepare for the problem that we are confronted with. According to chapter two, "the first step in solving a problem is to define it"  (Janero & Altshuler, 2011, p. 22)

"Critical thinking is indispensable to the art of being human" ( Janero & Altshuler, 2011, p. 30)

The beauty of critical thinking is the secured ownership of your thoughts. I like this quote because to me your thoughts are one of the best things about being human. You're able to keep a personal private bank of all of the things that are specific to you. It also is a form of what makes us ourselves, We will always use critical thinking no matter what comes with our lives. There will always be times where we need to use what we know and use the logical approach, or at least our version of logical. The beauty of that is what creates us to be an individual. Knowing that a person will always use critical thinking, however may not think as you do is what makes us equal yet individual. This quote describes that part of the art of being human is the fact that we as humans we will use critical thinking, what that actually consist of however is specific to ourselves. That is art. I feel like everyones way of thinking is what makes them unique. The way I solve a problem wont be how you solve a problem.

A good example of this would be parenting. Typically, we can assume that all parents want to be protectors, providers, teach morals, values, manners, education, respect, proper communication, etc. We know that naturally a parent wants the best for their child, and they would do almost anything to make sure that they are their child's safety. However, individually we are not able to all parent the same. Yes, we want our children to be well behaved, but when they misbehave the critical thinking that is used for repercussion may not be the same as another. My way of handling an issue with my child, may not be the same as how you would handle the same circumstance with yours. There are many times we see kids behavior out in public and judge. Whether good or bad there is judgement. Comments like "she's so behaved", or "he's so well mannered". The same judgement comes with bad observations, usually if its negative, it will not be vocalized. Those things usually stay within yourself. However the judgement is still there. "I would never allow my kids to act that way in public" or " Who raised these kids they're so "bad". The parenting is evident and is something that shows, however each persons approach to raising a child will be specific to them. This quote lets us know that our critical thinking is something that creates us to being human. Chapter two states, "thinking just might be the ultimate way to enjoy living" ( Janero & Altshuler, 2011, p. 30)
