Chapter 6: Overview
"Harmony, indicates a connection between music and the structure of the universe"(p.2)
I think this quote allows us to know the exact connection for what music is. It gives us an idea of what a person actually feels when listening to music. I think the harmony is also a portion of music we remember the most. Gets repeated and it allows us to be able to connect with the music and the universe. Listening to music is always going to be interpreted differently, however the harmony, as the quote mentions will be the part of universal connection with the universe.
It creates structure to good music. Even when we harmonize a song without any lyrics, its usually an indication of the basis of the entire song. I think this shows although music is very broad, it will still have a harmony, and that will be received universally no matter what background, or taste in music. I think it is the most important part of a musical piece of work.
"Once rhythm was discovered, it never left musical art" (p.4)
I like this quote because I think rhythm makes us be able to move to music. I think rhythm allows us to be able find a free space to actually want to dance. It gives us a way of expression through music. The tones in music mixed with rhythm allow emotions to be expressed. Giving rhythm we are able to get motivated and complete certain tasks. Many people love to involve music with daily things that they do. Things such as, driving to work, cleaning the house, going to the gym, etc. There is a way that music allows us to enjoy daily life tasks.
I think the rhythm of a song allows us to know which song we can choose for which tasks we are completing. A fast rhythm or song that has a faster rhythm, we might choose for things such as running, working out, cleaning. Maybe if we want more of a relaxing sound like a spa like sound or maybe you're going through a rough time, you may choose more of soothing, softer, calm, sort of music, and the rhythm would determine what we choose. It gives us a connection with the way we would pick the music according to the task. I think think that rhythm allows us to find freedom in the music we listen to.
"No one sound can be any more important than another, yet each one has its moment of prominence."(p.8)
I like this quote because I think its true no one sound can be more important than another. I think that a great piece of music allows us to be able to combined all sounds and combined all of the elements of music. I don't think there a greater part of a piece is more important. A good piece of music is going to have several different components. Each of those are going to be significant to the piece. I think that it creates us to enjoy the piece even more. A full piece of music will have a lot of structure, it is going to have several different components to it and all of them are going to contribute to having a great piece of music. Sometimes all of which can lead to a timeless classical piece of music.
Most great pieces of work are going to allow us to be able to hear its many components. It is a great way for us as listeners to enjoy it more. I think it creates diversity in musical pieces. It creates several different avenues to open for a connection to music. All of us as an audience can appreciate a great piece more, determining which we can relate to the most. That means that no one sound can be more important than the other, because each listening will connect with different parts, as well as different sounds.
